Are there emotional effects in Lyme disease?
Many of my patients have a lot of emotions when they are treated for Lyme disease. They are also sick and tired of being “sick and tired.” They typically have neurotransmitters that have been activated. If you ask me, they’re anxious. They’ll also have a wave of sadness, irritability, and sometimes fleeting despair. Their emotions typically come and go. The emotions are not something that you can “blame on your mother.” The emotions often originate from the neurotransmitter level, rather than external factors. It’s very hard for my patients to understand why the symptoms come and go. It’s also not so easy to treat with psychiatric counseling. The various medicines often don’t work as well as in patients without Lyme disease.
